I’m going to share some of my journey today ... but it’s a story I am 99.9% sure you can relate to, at least a little!
At the beginning of the year, I was working on some major goals I set for myself.
I had mapped out a clear, step-by-step plan for myself to make it happen. And then I put that plan into action! It wasn’t long before I started making some pretty big progress. I was really proud of what I did in such a short time …. But then this summer most of my progress came to a screeching halt. At some point, I stopped following through with my commitment to myself – and I actually started dreading the entire process. The same projects I used to get excited about weren’t motivating anymore, and I lost that fire to keep pushing through when things got tough. And things did get tough. I know they've gotten tough for a lot of people!
During the first few months of the pandemic, I seemed to push through and keep to my habits and routines. I got up every morning and prepared for my day by showering, putting on make up and getting dressed in my work clothes even though I wasn't going anywhere.
Then my kids finished their school year and with it their daily structure. Happily, they adapted well. My daughter decided surfing was her thing and my son was mountain biking at every opportunity. Since my husband is a musician, much of his structure was gone, too, so he decided to use the opportunity to spend more time with the kids surfing and biking. Meanwhile, I was trying to keep to my work and started feeling resentful that everyone else was outside having fun. So, I decided that rather than be resentful, I could cut back my work hours and get back into mountain biking shape. After all, that was one of my goals for the year that needed more attention. It was a good thought, and I have enjoyed spending time with my son and husband biking and getting back into shape. However, I definitely lost some of my vision in my professional life. Not good!
Finally, I had a hard talk with myself and I finally realized what one of the problems was.
The problem wasn’t the plan or the work that needed to get done … the problem was that I stopped working on my MINDSET. I had stopped connecting to my goals and my purpose. Since things had been moving along so smoothly, I got comfortable. I stopped doing the same things I was doing before that kept me inspired and focused. Before, I was listening to podcasts, reading books, and watching videos every day. Inspirational reading, listening, or watching makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE for me, more than I realized – it keeps me feeling positive, focused, and excited about my progress. When I got comfortable and stopped paying as much attention to them, things started to fall apart. It all starts with your mindset!
Challenge: I recommend setting a DAILY habit goal to to read, watch, or listen to something that inspires you! Even for just 5-10 minutes.
