Please don't deprive yourself.... Part 1

This past weekend, I was visiting Portland, Maine for a business event with my friend Talya.  She's an ayurvedic practitioner.  Check her out here.  Happily for me, she's also a self-proclaimed foodie.  What did that mean?  It meant we got to eat good food joyfully.  We enjoyed our food and some of the time we ate food that neither of us eat on a regular basis.

Enter Holy Donuts....
PictureThese weren't our donuts, we only got a half dozen.
Holy Donuts are a Portland phenomenon.  They're a healthy donut made with fresh Maine potatoes.  They use wholesome ingredients including the highest quality dark cocoa powder and 60% dark chocolate chips in all of the chocolate donuts and glazes, and color their other glazes with only fruit juices or vegetable dyes.  No fake colors!

Talya had walked past one of the shops earlier in the day when she didn't have time to stop and spied some of the donuts.  When we met later that afternoon, she insisted we stop to try some.  They were out!

Saturday morning was our business event.  Check-in was at 8:30am.  Talya was happy to discover that the original Holy Donuts shop was only a couple of blocks from our airbnb.  If we could just leave about a half our early, then we could stop for donuts on our way to the event.

Happily, we woke up early enough to make it to the donut shop by 7:45.  The line was out the door, so we had to wait for about fifteen minutes or so.

Were they good?  Yes!

Would either of us eat donuts every day?  No!

Balance is important.  Live life, be joyful, eat donuts.  Just save the healthy donuts for special occasions.

By the way, we shared with some of our colleagues when we got to our meeting.

No, I ascribe to the 80% rule but it has been hard for me as a cancer survivor to allow myself any refined sugars or sweeteners.

The only real sugar I allow myself is the occassional 2-4 times per month glass of red wine.

Part of me feels like the joy of a little delectable is just as healing to the body as the deepest greenest kale.

Jillian,

You'll have to use your 80% rule for something else. It's a good sticking point to have.

I feel about artificial colors and flavors the way you do about sugar. I'm just not tempted and my kids can't convince me to buy it for them, either.

Thanks for reading!!!
