An Apple a Day Just Might Keep the Doctor Away

History of Apples

🍏 Apples are members of the rose family.  They're most likely native to the Caucasus Mountains of Western Asia and maybe to Anatolia, the Asian part of Turkey.  Carbonized apples have been dated back to 6500 BC in Anatolia.

🍎Apples came to Britain with the Roman Empire and made it to America in 1623, brought by William Blackstone to Massachusetts.

🍏  They are now commonly eaten with the Dutch eating the most, the French next, consuming most of theirs in the form of cider.  Belgians and Italians are next, with the US coming in last only averaging one apple per week.  We bring up the average in my family!!!

The Health Benefits of Apples

🍎  Apples are a highly digestible alkaline food.

🍏  They have a high-water content, which quenches both immediate and cellular-level thirst.

🍎 Because they’re juicy, have a high fiber content and aren’t sticky, they help clean the teeth and exercise the gums when eaten raw.

Pomegranates are one of my favorite things about fall and that’s before I even get to the health benefits!

History

Pomegranates have a long and varied history.  They are a Persian and south Asian native and one of the oldest fruits known to humans. It was brought to China in 126 BC from Kabul, Afghanistan under the Han dynasty.  When the Moors conquered Spain in about 800 AD, they introduced the pomegranate.  The fruit became the emblem of Granada in the heart of Spain.

Turnips aren't just for the livestock!

😎 I usually think of turnips as more of a winter vegetable, but last week I received a bunch of small, sweet, turnips and they were quite good eaten raw and sliced thinly onto a salad. 🥗

🌰 Turnips originally come from Russia, Siberia and the Scandanavian península. They are a member of the cabbage family and has round or top shaped roots, white skin with purplish or greenish crowns, and thin, green, hairy leaves.

🌰 They flourish in poor soils and keep well, making them traditionally popular with the poor. However, it’s valuable for its nutrients and medicinal and healthful qualities.

🌰 Raw turnips have a tangy flavor similar to a mild radish but are sweet when cooked. The root is high in Vitamin C.

A small garden on the way to my writing workshop in Riomaggiore, Italy.
🤸‍♀️ I have basil on my mind! 🤸‍♀️

🌱 I always associate basil with Italian food and here I am in Italy at a writing workshop and the basil flavor in the foods is more delicious here than at home.

🌱 Basil is good for a lot more than enhancing the flavor of tomatoes!

🌱Basil contains essential oils, including eugenol, citronellol and linalool that help lower inflammation.

Licorice!

Picture
🌿 Licorice is a member of the pea family. It grows wild in southern Europe and Asia. It’s mostly grown for it’s rhizomes and roots.

🌿 Licorice is fifty times sweeter than sugar, but generally not used as a sweetener because of it’s strong flavor.

🌿 Licorice can be purchased as the whole dried root, sliced, or powdered.

🌿 When my children were small, they were given four or five inch pieces of licorice root at their school’s Halloween festival, as a healthy, sweet treat. They enjoyed chewing on it for weeks. Licorice root cleanses the mouth and teeth and arrests tooth decay because of it’s germicidal action.
